06:35 am - buffalo
Last night I had buffalo burgers. The aroma was too sweet - I had to goad them up with spice. It took some used to, but I finished them.
Anyone know if buffalo is more healthier than beef? Definitely saw less grease in the pan.

[Bad username: susanandleonard.livejournal.com] are in town (that'd be my parents' shared account, which exists solely to read my locked posts). They got in on Saturday before the snow. We spent Sunday inside. Monday was my last day at my job - until January when I keep working on this collection, for free. [personal profile] solarcat hung out with us for a couple of hours before leaving for Michigan.

Today, we went shopping downtown. I did not get shoes, which is what I need (my usual comfy work shoes having died rather spectacularly), but I did get a sparkly pink shirt and socks and jewelry magazines. And Dad didn't get anything, despite always needing new clothes because he never buys any.

Now we're killing time before heading to a Thai restaurant in Harvard Square, because Ellie wants to drive and then be able to park. It is my parents 36th anniversary, \o/, and they're taking us along for the celebration, \o?

09:38 pm - poll: childhood vaccines and autism
Note: I found this to be an extremely difficult poll to word. I had a limited amount of responses that I could add, so I'm sorry if I left out any categories. I did my best to create the most unbiased poll I could on this topic.

This poll was NOT created for any specific reason, other than to satiate my personal curiosity about people and how they view the world. Your responses will NOT be used for any sort of research.

I would appreciate EVERYONE who reads this journal, even if it's just in passing, to please fill out this poll.

I also wanted to mention ahead of time that I included the "I am religious" response because I believe this does have, in some instances, some bearing on people's thoughts about the medical world (for example, Christian Scientists and Jehovah's Witnesses).

Poll #1501992 Vaccines and Autism
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 19

Your thoughts on childhood vaccines and autism. Please select ALL that apply to you, and please be honest:

07:44 pm - the american christmas
I have noticed that this is the first year that I haven't been upset or even annoyed by the inevitable onset of Christmas. I've been pretty numb about the whole thing, actually. Christmas in America has become secularized for the most part, it's just part of life, and it's not going away any time soon, so why fight it. There are more important things going on in the world that need more attention than some holiday. So fuck it, I'll be a jolly atheist Jew this Christmas.

I also don't give a shit when people tell me to have a "Merry Christmas". They're just words. And I say them right back. I don't understand why some of my fellow atheists and non-Christians get so offended by those words. Is it really the worst thing that someone can say to you? I sincerely doubt it. And if it is, then you've never been told by a street-corner preacher with a loud speaker that you're a child of the devil and that you'll spend all eternity burning in the fires of hell. (This happened to me in Chicago, in 2004.) Comparatively, I'd say that "Merry Christmas" has a much more friendly, well-intended intonation about it.

Everyone just needs to relax. And if you can't, help out a homeless shelter this winter. You'll feel better, and so will they.

Next week, when the roommate is out of town, I'm going to clean that apartment like my li'l bro washes his hair. It's going to be spotless, perfectly styled, and smelling good.

Look, I wrote stuff!

(The wall is actually a real place in my neighborhood, though [community profile] auriel is a fake place in my head. I walk past the wall every day. Maybe it will give me something I truly need, one day.)

All the MCR fans reading this journal have probably already seen [info]morebliss's Gerard Way picspam/quotespam, but my mom hasn't. (We are crossing our fingers so hard that they play New Orleans in June, so I can take my parents.)

Speaking of my parents! They will be here on Saturday!! !!!!!!!

Mainly intended for people who are seeing this on LJ... )

They say Christmas is the season to be jolly, but anyone who signs on the internet and sees a search engine page probably knows that's not the case with Tiger Woods.

Why is his marriage making him the top storied celebrity? Is it because it is the holiday season?

05:14 pm - rec and request for help
sl1 k2tog psso by [personal profile] carleton97 (MCR, Bob/Frank/Jamia, ~9k)

You guys. Bob owns a yarn shop. Eeeee! (Basically, this fic and Buy Handmade by [info]jjtaylor are the fics of my crafty fangirl soul. Buy Handmade sustained me through "I'm going to learn to make SOMETHING, dammit" - which turned out to be jewelry - and sl1 k2tog psso is going to sustain me through "I'm going to learn to knit, dammit.")

***

Anyone got recs for a yarn shop in or near Boston? T-accessible is preferred, although Ellie has a car and can sometimes be bribed or badgered into driving me around.

10:55 pm - Oops.
So I put a plastic thing on the top rack of the dishwasher, and it fell through the rack and landed on the heating element.

Ellie's mad skillz, a leatherman (the tool), and some sandpaper later, the plastic is gone.

/o\

Also, my laptop case is cracked, right at the edge of my optical drive. :(

05:55 pm - This is a happy post.
Oh look! It's Ellie's phone!

(Context: my sister works for a company whose main thing is superbatteries of the future, or something. Charge faster, last longer, don't explode - that kind of thing. And she's in the market for a new phone since hers (which used to be mine, and is about 4 years old) no longer has any battery life to speak of. And it's a phone shaped much like the one in the photo.)

And now that I've killed the joke with explanation...

Mail! I received a card from [personal profile] harborshore on Thursday, a card and a wrapped gift-shaped object* from [personal profile] thelemic on Friday, cards from [personal profile] solarcat and [personal profile] insunshine on Saturday, and cards from [personal profile] turlough and [personal profile] chaosmanor yesterday. :D

* Which I haven't opened yet, because I'm not sure if I should wait. [personal profile] thelemic?

My weekend: naked people and nearly-naked people. )

10:27 pm - LJ fails again! This time, on gender issues.
As of their next code push (and LJ's code pushes tend to happen on Thursdays), LiveJournal will require all users to specify "male" or "female" for their account's gender. No third option.

The change is almost certainly to target advertising in a more gender-stereotyped way.

EDIT: 2009-12-15 10:30 EST
Probably thanks to the many people contacting LJ, the code has been pulled. It will not be going live in the next code push.

Unfortunately, I don't trust LJ not to attempt to sneak something like this through again.

[personal profile] synecdochic has a summary. She suggests going to the Edit Profile page and changing your gender to Unspecified, contacting Feedback, and emailing the GM of US operations at anjelika@livejournalinc.com.

complete list of posts on my Dreamroll re: lj's genderfail )

Geek Feminism also has a post.

If anyone reading this would like a Dreamwidth account (Dreamwidth's diversity statement specifically includes and "welcome[s] people of any gender identity or expression"), I have some invite codes, and if they run out, I'm willing to buy accounts for people who need them.

05:52 am - original CDs
Okay, so I ripped a tune from my deleted Shannon "love goes all the way" CD

and all the tracks were recognized on the iTunes database (artist, album, track title, etc.)
This was an original pressing from 1986, but we didn't have iTunes back then. How on earth would the tracks be recognized on something 23 years old?
I understand new pressings, even with older music, could be coded, but man, this just freaked me out!

Don just ordered this for me! :D :D :D

Here's a bigger (though slightly less contrasted) version of the image:

WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS IS GONNA BE ON MY BEWBS!!! <3

I'm going drinking tonight with Don and a couple of his friends up in Indiana. Todd is a stand-up comedian, he's a funny guy. And his wife, Erin, is also very awesome. I got all dolled up for once! And I can't wait to start drinking...

04:41 pm - paranoid conjecture:
Sometimes I wonder if massively popular networking sites like Facebook forever keep our photos and words so that they can blackmail future generations of aspiring politicians. I wouldn't put it past them. They could sway elections, even team up with politicians to take down opponents. There are various evil outcomes. Nothing on the internet is ever truly private.

I smell a new Hollywood horror movie fad on the horizon, haha:

- "I Know What You Blogged Last Summer"
- "Photobucket III: Revenge of the Pixels"
- "'Til Tweet Do Us Part"
- "R.S.V.P. or D.I.E."

All of them are of course starring Troy McClure! ;)

* All $winterholiday cards have been mailed! As well as the international packages. Domestic packages will go out Saturday, after I finish making their contents.

* Items have been made for [personal profile] harborshore and [personal profile] fleurdeliser's jewelry prompts (and you can still leave me a prompt if you want), but I didn't take pictures last night, because dinnertime. When I get home, before dashing out for my last Slutcracker (probably NSFW) street team thing. *nods*

* Speaking of The Slutcracker, I am seeing it tomorrow night. Tonight, after flyering, I will be going to Naked Comedy (probably NFSW) with [personal profile] solarcat and Ellie.

* Dumb thing I did last night: whacked my hand hard enough to scrape a chunk of flesh off my knuckle.

* Dumb thing I did next: put a bandaid over it so tightly that my fingertip was ever so slightly purple.

* Dumb thing I did, part three: failed to realize my fingertip was suffering from circulation issues until five minutes ago.
